A Quick Guide To Entrance Exam Tuition

Entrance exam tuition is provided for Upton Hall School and St Anselms College.

About The Exams

The Upton entrance exam consists of two Verbal Reasoning papers each approximately 50 minutes long. The St Anselms Entrance exam consists of three papers: Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and English which covers a Reading comprehension and a writing task.

Gentle Encouragement

For the Upton exam, in the initial months, I introduce the children to the different question types discussing strategies and methods. With gentle encouragement and fostering an atmosphere where it is ok to make mistakes.

Familiarity And Timing

Again, the aim is to increase pupils familiarity and confidence to carry out the problems independently. Homework is given to reinforce these concepts. We gradually progress to practice tests and discuss exam techniques such as time management.

Maths Strengths & Weaknesses

The same approach is taken for the St Anselm’s Verbal Reasoning test. For the Mathematics test, I firstly give the children a practice St Anselms Maths paper to complete. I assess strengths and weaknesses and then plan work to develop understanding and confidence tailored to each individual child’s needs. I then carry out further assessments and subsequent work is planned accordingly.

English & Written Assessment

For the English assessment, I explore with the children different question types that appear on the reading comprehension and how to construct answers effectively. We carry out a range of practice comprehension tasks using a variety of different types of texts as well as doing St Anselm’s practice tests. For the writing test, I help children improve their ability to plan and organize their writing. We examine different sentence types and look at how they can be incorporated effectively into their writing.

Confidence To Succeed

In all sessions, I aim to develop a collaborative approach giving the children constant encouragement and reassurance. I actively try not to put extra pressure on the children in what to some can already be a worrying process. I constantly emphasise that the most important thing they can do is to try their best.
